Long-time public servant was devoted to the citizens of South Georgia and the state

LANIER Co. – The Lanier County Board of Commissioners, the Mayor and Council of the City of Lakeland will host the official dedication of U.S. Highway 22/State Route 31 from the intersection of SR 11 and SR 31 in Lakeland to the intersection of SR 7 and SR31 in Valdosta in Lowndes County as the James Slaton “Jay” Shaw Memorial Highway.

The road dedication ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 19 at 1:00 pm at the Jim and Mary Threatte Arts & Civic Center, 99 East Burnt Church Road in Lakeland, Georgia. The public is invited to attend.
“We were honored by Jay’s leadership; his keen vision for transportation and his ardent advocacy for the constituents of the 8th congressional district,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry. “We are excited to see his legacy memorialized through the naming of this state route.”

Shaw served on the State Transportation Board from 2010 to 2015 and led the board as chairman in 2013.

For the 17 years prior to his service on the Transportation Board, Shaw devoted his time, talents and energy in the Georgia General Assembly where he represented the residents of Berrien, Clinch, Lanier and Lowndes counties/House District 176. He was a strong supporter of advancing healthcare in rural Georgia; improving Georgia’s transportation system; and providing access to jobs for all citizens of the state. Previously Shaw served ten years as the mayor of Lakeland, where his leadership was instrumental in advancing the city throughout the region and preserving the Banks Lake as a historic landmark.

Signs for the Jay Shaw Memorial Highway will be placed at the beginning and end of the memorial highway.

Georgia’s deer season baiting law is already dedicated to him, because of him. Now we have to name a highway as well?
