Wayne B. Adkins, 77, of Valdosta died on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Langdale Hospice House. Mr. Adkins was born in Valdosta on November 25, 1938 to the late Percy Bryan and Ruth Daniel Adkins. He retired from the United States Air Force with the rank of Captain after 20 years of faithful and dedicated service. He began his aviation career in the Air Force in 1959 and served as a Bombardier Navigator on the B-47 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later became an Instructor Pilot at Moody Air Force Base in the T-37 and then flew the HH53 Helicopter in Combat Search and Rescue missions during Viet Nam in 1973 and 1974. He retired from Moody Air Force Base as the Operations Systems Management Supervisor with the 68th Tactical Fighter Squadron. Mr. Adkins was a member of the VFW and the American Legion and loved to travel, going to the beach, especially the Gulf coast, reading books, and woodworking. He was a member of First Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brian T. and Michelle Adkins of Corona, California and Steven D. Adkins of Sharpsburg, Georgia; a granddaughter, Alexandra Adkins and a grandson, Brian Adkins, Jr. both of Corona, California; his sister, Frances Finklea of Tampa, Florida; one niece and three nephews.
Services for Wayne B. Adkins will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, September 3, 2016 in the chapel of the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The interment will follow in the cemetery.
