List of Lowndes Hurricane Shelters

| September 1, 2016

LOWNDES Co. – Several shelters will be open tonight as Hurrican Hermine approaches Lowndes County.

  • The City of Hahira is working with the Hahira United Methodist Church to provide a shelter as Tropical Storm Hermine moves through the area. The shelter will open at 9 p.m. at 100 East Stanfill St. For more information, call (229) 245-5270.
  • Mathis City Auditorium at 2300 N. Ashley Street will be open overnight for anyone who does not have adequate shelter during the storm. The shelter, which will be operated by the American Red Cross, will open at 7 p.m.
  • LAMP (Homeless Shelter) has chosen to open an emergency shelter for those seeking shelter from the storm this evening.  LAMP will be open to non-residents so long as we have the room.  The address is 714 Charlton Street, phone number229.245.7157 x227.

The American Red Cross is working alongside community partners to provide safe lodging. Right now, Red Cross has 5 shelters scheduled to open tonight for those affected by Hurricane Hermine. Additional shelters will be opened if needed. The Red Cross will continue to monitor and respond to other areas as storms roll through the state this week.

Red Cross shelters provide the immediate emergency needs of those affected, including a safe place to stay and food to eat. The Red Cross encourages anyone coming to an emergency shelter to bring personal items for each member of their family: prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and important documents. It’s also important to remember special items for children such as diapers, formula, toys and other items for family members who have unique needs.
