VALDOSTA, Ga. – Freshman Gavin Childers continued his role as a consistent performer for the Valdosta State Men’s Cross Country team last weekend, and the Gulf South Conference took notice, resulting in a GSC Freshman of the Week honor.

Childers, out of Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Ga., represented one of the Blazers’ top three finishers in Saturday’s Mountain Dew Gator Invitational at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. He logged a time of 27:52.22 in the 8k race, which resulted in a 30th place finish among all non-DI participants. Childers’ efforts helped lead the Blazers to a sixth place finish among 16 competing teams.

“Gavin has been an immediate contributor to the team through his attitude and actions,” said Head Coach Todd Smoot. “This is a well-deserved recognition by the GSC for an outstanding student-athlete. He is on the path to faster times this season and beyond.”

Over the course of his young career thus far, Childers has been one of the top finishers in each of Valdosta State’s three races. His top performance on the season came at the Georgia College Bobcat Invitational on September 10th in Milledgeville, Ga., where he delivered a top-ten finish with an 8k time of 26:40.90.

Valdosta State returns to action this weekend on October 1st for the Alabama-Huntsville Meet in Huntsville, Ala. The race is slated for a 9:00 a.m. start.
