Blazer Golf Sizzles in Season Opening Round

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. Led by Olav Zandveld, the Valdosta State golf team delivered a sparkling opening round to the 2016-17 season and combined for a score of 5-under 283 on day one of the Kiawah Island Invitational. Among the 18 participating teams, Monday’s performance in Kiawah Island, S.C. put the Blazers in second place heading into day two.

Zandveld delivered a standout effort with a 4-under 68 round, which placed him in a tie for third place among 90 participants.Davis Roche fell in close behind in a tie for six place after delivering a score of 2-under.

Colton Godwin and Jordan Long were Valdosta State’s final two contributors, battling the hot and humid day to post rounds of even par 72 and 1-over 73, respectively. Godwin’s round was good for a position tied at 21st, and Long’s first round as a Blazer placed him in a tie for 32nd.

Limestone was the only team to edge out the Blazers in round one, and did so with a team score of 8-under 280. LC was led by Cabrick Waters, who put up the top round on the day at 7-under 65.

The Blazers will continue the tournament tomorrow morning, with VSU’s first round two tee time scheduled for 10:20 a.m.
