From one end of Georgia to the other gun violence continues to erupt. Two Douglas residents were sent to the hospital after being shot while walking. The couple reported that a black car pulled alongside and the man and woman were ordered to get inside. Their fearful ride came to an end as they were walked to the rear of an abandoned house and both were shot multiple times but managed to escape with no life threatening injuries and were treated and released from the Coffee regional Medical center. In Moultrie a homeowner that caught teenagers burglarizing his residence was fired upon, the suspects involved were later apprehended.

A 77 year old man in Atlanta was shot seven times during an attempted carjacking incident. He and his wife were leaving a relatives birthday party when the incident occurred. Police continue their search for the suspect. 22-year-old Ricquavius Tarver, of Warrenton, has been charged with murder following the Thomson shooting death of 32-year-old Roosevelt Demmons. Lawaun Jermaine Flournoy was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene of an Augusta incident and so far no word on a suspect or suspects.

An 18 year old Albany gang member Kenneth George has been convicted on 11 counts in a case of armed robbery. According to court documents George and two younger teens committed armed robbery to raise their status within the gang. Both of the younger teens testified against George and entered guilty pleas.

Grady Memorial Hospital officials report that 83 year old Meriwether County grandmother, Dorothy Dow who was brutally attacked and set afire in her home by robbers August 4th has now died. All the suspects involved were captured.

The new Walmart store set to open on Bemiss Road at the end of the year is expected to hire 105 workers for positions including openings at a convenience store and gas station. Non salaried positions will be open but department managers will be first hires. During the State of Georgia National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Conference on August 20th, a communications company presented a one day scholarship opportunity to collegiate members of NCNW with the Atlanta Falcons. Brittanye Blake of Valdosta State University was announced as the collegiate winner for the internship at one of the Atlanta Falcons’ home games for the 2016-2017 season.

Eligible small firms that want to pursue business opportunities with the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) now have a resource specifically designed to enable them to do just that. Georgia DOT’s State Supported Funding Program (SSFP) has opened a Business Resource Help Center to assist eligible disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs), and registered small and veteran-owned businesses in identifying and responding to business opportunities funded by the Transportation Funding Act (TFA) of 2015.
