GSC Releases Preseason Women’s Soccer Rankings

vsu womens soccerVALDOSTA The Valdosta State soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the annual Gulf South Conference Preseason poll, according to a release by the GSC office on Thursday.

The preseason poll is determined by way of votes collected from coaches throughout the league. In the final poll, Valdosta State racked up 61 points with one 3rd place vote in the final poll, along with one 5th place vote, four 6th place votes, two votes in 7th and 8th place, and one 9th place tally. Christian Brothers fell in just above the Blazers in sixth place with 73 points, while Mississippi College edged out West Alabama’s 82 point total with 83 points for a fourth place finish.

The top three teams in the poll consisted of Lee in first place with seven 1st place votes for 114 total points, followed by West Florida in second place with 111. North Alabama claimed third place with two 1st place votes and four 2nd place votes for a total of 104 points.

Falling in below Valdosta State were West Georgia in 8th place with 53 points and Union in 10th place with 44 points. Alabama-Huntsville, Shorter, and Delta State rounded out the bottom three with 33, 22, and 12 points, respectively.

The Blazers received individual recognition for a pair of players, as both Alyssa Curtis and Brittney Benedict were highlighted as newcomers to watch during the upcoming 2016 campaign. Head Coach Rebecca Nolin will look to Curtis for quality minutes in goal this season after a sophomore season at Andrew College, in which the Palate, Fla. native posted four shutouts during an eight-win season last fall. Meanwhile, Benedict joins the Blazers as a freshman this season, fresh off of a high school career at Park Vista High in Palm Beach, Fla., which included 40 goals and 46 assists.

Valdosta State’s season is set to kick off on September 1st in Saint Leo, Fla. against the Lions before an early, non-conference home opener against Auburn Montgomery just three days later on Sunday, September 4th at 5:00 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex.

Preseason training will begin on Wednesday, August 10th, leading up to the final weekend of VSU’s preseason schedule, which includes the annual Meet the Blazers event on Saturday August 27th at 6:00 p.m. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. at theVSU Soccer Complex, and the event will include a chance to meet, play games with, and receive autographs from the players and coaches of the 2016 squad.
