VALDOSTA  It’s been a long wait, but the Valdosta State Blazer football team returned to the field on Monday for the opening practice session of the 2016 preseason schedule.

With a host of coaching changes, along with a large group of new players, the Blazers will spend the first few days of practice acclimating themselves with one another. Nevertheless, veteran wide receiver Donovan Bolden indicated that the team has a lot to look forward to if the first practice was any indication.

“It feels great to be back out here today,” said Bolden. “We’ve got a great group of new guys that I’m very interested in working with and checking out their talent. I’m hoping that I can learn from them and hopefully maybe even teach them some things too. These new coaches have put in a lot of time, work, and field study to make sure they bring out the best in all of us. I’m truly grateful for that, and I feel confident that all these other players and receivers are grateful as well.”

Head Coach Kerwin Bell, in his first season at the helm of the Valdosta State football program, chimed in after practice with his thoughts on the slew of new additions expected to don the red and black this fall.

“I told our coaches I was so proud of them (before today’s practice),” said Bell. “They left no stone unturned this summer and this spring. We went out to get some kids that we thought would improve our roster, and I think we did that. Now, we’ve got a lot of competition at every level, and we’re ready to let these guys get out there and compete. We’ll see who wins it, but there’s going to be a lot of competition at every position, which is going to be a good thing for our football team.”
