Valdosta restaurant destroyed by fire

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta Fire Department is investigating a structure fire that destroyed a Valdosta restaurant Monday morning.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., VFD units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at El Potro Mexican Restaurant at 1173 St. Augustine Road, said VFD Capt. James Clinkscales.

“VFD Engine 6 reported heavy smoke coming from the interior of  restaurant upon arrival, due to the fire conditions  with heavier smoke and the increase in fire. A second alarm was requested for additional fire units to help and assist. Fire unit aggressively made an interior attack of the fire using multiple hand lines and aerial apparatus,” Clinkscales said.”

There were a total of 15 fire units and 35 fire personnel on the  scene. The fire was under control at 10:23 AM.

Lowndes County Fire and Rescue responded to assist with providing additional manpower. Valdosta Police Department assisted with directing traffic and Georgia Power secured all electrical utilities. SGMC EMS Unit assisted VFD personnel with Firefighter Rehab.

The business was not occupied and the owners showed a short time afterward. There were no fire personnel injuries reported.

The fire is still under investigation at this time.
