VPD officer recovering after exchanging gunfire with suspect

| July 8, 2016

VALDOSTA – A Valdosta Police Officer is recovering after he was shot multiple times during a shootout outside an apartment complex Friday morning.

At approximately 7:54 a.m., VPD Officer Randall Hancock responded to a damage to property call at Three Oaks Apartments on North Oak Street Extension.

“This was a non-priority call, meaning it was a call about a potential vehicle break-in that had already occurred,” said VPD Chief Brian Childress. “Officer Hancock arrived at the scene at 8:12 a.m., and after arriving on scene and telling dispatch he was on scene, a little over a minute later the officer called out on the radio, screaming for assistance because he was saying he was shot.”

Childress said Hancock was shot three times while exchanging gunfire with an Asian male.

Multiple local agencies responded to Hancock’s call for assistance.

Hancock was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment and is expected to recover, Childress said. The suspect, who was also wounded in the gunfire exchange, was taken to SGMC and is expected to recover as well.

The investigation of the incident has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Early reports suggested a second suspect was being sought, but Childress said those reports turned out to be untrue.

Valdosta Today will continue to report information about the shooting as it becomes available.
