GSP: 19 Valdosta area crashes over Independence Day weekend, 9 fatalities statewide

VALDOSTA – During the 78 hour Independence Day Holiday Period which started on Friday, July 1st and ended Monday, July 4th ; Post 31 Troopers investigated 19 crashes with 9 injuries and 0 fatalities.

Of the 19 crashes, 4 were caused by drivers failing to maintain their lane of travel, 3 were caused by drivers following too closely, 3 were caused by drivers making an improper turn or lane change, 2 were caused by drivers failing to yield, 2 were caused by drivers who were under the influence and 1 was caused by a fatigued driver.

Post 31 Troopers conducted 275 traffic stops resulting in 182 citations and 199 warnings. Troopers issued 88 speeding citations, 20 seatbelt citations, 9 child restraint citations, 4 distracted driving citations, 9 DUI’s and 1 drug arrest. Troopers also conducted 6 motorist assists during the holiday period.

Statewide, Georgia State Patrol investigated 379 crashes resulting in 181 injuries and 5 fatalities. Fatal crashes were reported by Post 3-Cartersville(2); Post 43-Calhoun; Post 7-Toccoa; and Post 14-Colquitt. Other agencies reporting fatal crashes (4): DeKalb Co. PD; Richmond Co. S/O; Newton Co. S/O; and Gwinnett Co. PD.

A total of 9 fatalities were reported during the 2016 Independence Day Holiday Period. Troopers issued 9,038 citations, 12,112 warnings and made 277 DUI arrests statewide for the holiday period.
