VALDOSTA – The Valdosta State volleyball program and Head Coach Mike Swan are pleased to announce the 2016 signing class this week. The newcomers include five new additions, each of which are expected to be exciting additions to the highly successful program.

The group of newcomers are made up of three freshman and two junior transfers, which brings the roster total up to 15, Swan’s largest roster in the history of his 28-year coaching career. One international student-athlete is included in the list of new recruits, as is a transfer from Littleton, Colo. Meanwhile, one Florida signee and two players from Georgia round out the list of VSU volleyball’s newest Blazers.

“I think we addressed all of our needs with this recruiting class,” said Head Coach Mike Swan. “We needed another middle, we needed more experience on both the right and left sides, and we needed someone to compete for the libero position. We got all of those things with this class, and I’m really excited.”

In the offseason, Swan spent a significant amount of attention zeroing in on filling specific needs for the upcoming season. That focus began with the addition of three outside hitters. Brittany Castro out of Roswell, Ga. and Dariah Powell out of Tyrone, Ga. are two freshman who have been called on as freshman to add depth to the Blazer attack, while Tristyn Sells out of Littleton, Colo. rounds out the group of attackers as a junior transfer out of Palm Beach State.

On the defensive side, libero Gabie Velez-Ortiz out of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico is expected to immediately bolster the back row with defensive experience that led to 269 digs as a sophomore at Arizona Western College. At the net, the Blazers will look for a blocking presence out of freshman Kayla Widera, who was recently named the Female Athlete of the Year following an MVP season at J.W. Mitchell High School in Trinity, Fla.
