VALDOSTA –  The student-athletes of Valdosta State put in countless hours of work in an effort to achieve their academic goals last semester, and they were well represented this week, as seven were named to the 2016 Gulf South Conference FireSeeds Spring All-Academic team by the league office on Monday.

The GSC All-Academic teams are selected by the conference’s Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a vote. Nominees must be significant contributors to their squads, must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale, and may not be freshman or first-semester/quarter transfers.

Head Coach Thomas Macera‘s softball squad accounted for two of the seven Blazers to be recognized. Sophomore outfielderBrandy Morgan teamed up with South Region Pitcher of the Year Caitlyn Calhoun to achieve All-Academic status with 3.74 and 3.76 GPAs, respectively. Calhoun’s appearance on the list marked her second consecutive year to earn the honor.

The Blazer golf team joined the fray with representation from sophomore Jake Harpe and All-GSC selection Chris Rogers. The duo, who carried 3.40 and 3.81 cumulative GPA’s, respectively, teamed up to add to the list of VSU’s honorees.

All-GSC selection Gereon Heitmann, who led the Blazer men’s tennis team to a Gulf South Conference Championship and a No. 5 ranking in the final ITA Division II poll of 2016, secured a spot with a 3.40 GPA. Meanwhile, Bea Morales Hernandez, who also earned All-GSC recognition, represented women’s tennis with a 3.43 GPA.

Blazer baseball’s Ryan Smith rounded out the selections for Valdosta State after an impressive season in the outfield that included six homers, 31 RBI’s, and 25 runs scored. The standout left-handed hitter complemented his athletic accomplishments by closing out the spring semester with a 3.42 cumulative GPA.

In addition to the seven student-athletes to be voted to the GSC’s All-Academic team in the spring, Valdosta State saw 36 student-athletes named to the Gulf South Conference’s Spring Honor Roll for having a 3.00 GPA or higher.
