VALDOSTA – For the past two years, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Section has implemented a free tutorial program for children around the community in K-5 grades.

Spearheaded by the Education Committee within the organization, Co-Chairs Bettye McClendon and Carolyn Haigler along with the committee members believed in the early beginning of the organization that a need to provide free tutorial services to local children was necessary.  With the support of County Commissioner Joyce Evans, Valdosta City and Lowndes County Schools, children have been given this opportunity to assist in nurturing children in the classroom to reach their full potential alongside targeting early literacy intervention and math.  To show the organization’s appreciation for the volunteers from all over the community who have donated many hours of their free time to support this initiative, the Education Committee hosted a volunteer appreciation dinner. The keynote speaker was Dr. Patricia Marks and volunteers for the tutorial program other than NCNW members include: Margurite Gravelee, Joyce Lewis, Melinda McMullin, Ora Morrison, Elaine O’Haire, Fred Schifando, Barbara Williams, Manda Carson, Elizabeth Burnette, Lynn Kilgard, Massonnia Mattox, Dennis Morrison, Sabrina Randolph, and Teresa Moore. Students of the program created a “Thank you” banner for the volunteers for their countless time and support they have provided.

Carolyn Haigler presented McClendon with a gift of appreciation for her dedication to education and for spearheading the tutorial vision into implementation.  The tutorial program currently provides free tutoring to children in the Leila Ellis Building and the feedback from parents has grown over the past few months.  The program will kick off again in mid-August and will receive registrations at that time.  It is a free program for all students in K through 5.  For more information about the tutorial program parents, guardians and prospective volunteers can contact 229-234-2353 or
