GSP: 12 Memorial Day Weekend traffic deaths

VALDOSTA – During the Memorial Holiday Period, Georgia State Patrol Troopers investigated 430 crashes with 232 injuries and 5 fatalities throughout the state.

Statewide total of fatalities during the holiday period were 12. Agencies reporting fatalities other than GSP are Atlanta P.D. (1), Gwinnett County P.D. (1), Monroe County S.O. (3), Newton County S.O. (1) and Houston County S.O. (1).

Troopers issued 6,729 citations, 9,060 warnings and made 257 DUI arrests during the 78 hour holiday period.

Valdosta Post 31 Troopers investigated 20 crashes with six injuries and no fatalities.

Of the 20 crashes, two were caused from drivers following too closely, two were caused from driver’s failing to maintain their lane of travel, two were caused from deer entering the roadway, one was caused by an impaired driver, one was caused by a fatigued driver and one caused by a distracted driver.

Post 31 Troopers conducted 392 traffic stops resulting in 184 citations and 297 warnings. Troopers issued 129 speeding citations, 14 seatbelt violations, 11 child restraint violations, six distracted driving citations and made two DUI arrests.

Statewide numbers have yet been released. There were 12 fatalities reported in Georgia during the holiday period.
