VALDOSTA  – May is National Pet Adoption Month, but the Lowndes County Animal Shelter is currently in the happy position of not having any dogs to adopt.

Over the weekend, all dogs available for adoption at the shelter were either rescued or adopted, said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County Clerk, on Monday.

“Today is a direct result of the shelter staff’s hard work,” said Dukes. “There were a total of 107 dogs rescued or adopted from the shelter in April.”

The empty adoption rooms have allowed shelter staff to aggressively sanitize the rooms which helps keep kennel cough and other diseases at a minimum, Dukes said.

On Sunday, 17 dogs were rescued, putting the shelter on track for healthy May numbers as well.

“In addition to rescue, great efforts are being made to help keep pets in homes by providing the training resources needed to help dogs be good housemates,” Dukes said. “Currently, free house training classes are being offered at the shelter on a first come, first serve basis.”

To sign up for one of the classes, call the Lowndes County Animal Shelter at (229) 671-2760.
