LOWNDES Co – The contractor installing weigh scales for the statewide Georgia Department of Transportation project Weigh In Motion has announced several Interstate 75 lane closures in Lowndes County. The work is dependent upon favorable weather.

The Weigh In Motion project involves installing weigh scales in interstate lanes approximately 3,000 feet upstream of each of the existing 19 weigh stations to prescreen commercial vehicles.

The scales are designed to capture and record axle weights and gross vehicle weights as vehicles drive over a measurement site. Unlike static scales, WIM systems are capable of measuring vehicles traveling at reduced or normal speeds and do not require the vehicle to come to a stop. This makes the weighing process more efficient, and, in the case of commercial vehicles, allows trucks below the weight limit to bypass static scales or inspection sites.
