VSU Golf Finishes 9th at Buccaneer Invitational

MIAMI BEACH – The Valdosta State golf team wrapped up competition at the 2016 Buccaneer Invitational on Tuesday and claimed a ninth place finish after an 11-over 863 finish against a strong field of 16 teams at the par-71, 6,733-yard Normandy Shores Golf Club course in Miami Beach, Fla.

Chris Rogers, who stayed under par throughout the first two rounds, shot 1-over 72 in the third and final round. The end result for the senior was a 3-under 210 finish and a third place position out of 90 participants. Davis Roche also closed out among the top 20 on the leaderboard after posting a final round score of 3-over 74. His final round led to an overall score of 1-over 214 in the tournament and a tie at 17th place.

Only five strokes separated third through ninth place in the event, with Eastern Florida State and St. Thomas Aquinas claiming a tie at third place. Nova Southeastern topped the field with a score of 6-under 846 score, and Lynn earned a second place finish with a 2-under 850 team score.

For the Blazers, Jake Harpe shot 4-over 75 in the third round for an overall score of 7-over 220, while Colton Godwin and Matt Anderson both posted a 5-over 76 final round to finish 8-over 221 and 9-over 222, respectively. Harpe finished tied for 45th place, while Godwin earned a tie for 53rd, and Anderson closed out tied for 61st place on the individual leaderboard.

Lynn’s Mateo Gomez won the event with a 5-under 208 score, while Brendan Hunter’s 4-under 209 effort for St. Thomas Aquinas was good for second place.
