LOWNDES Co. – A portion of the right (outside) lanes of Interstate 75 South and North are scheduled to close for one day for additional work on a statewide Georgia Department of Transportation project called Weigh In Motion. The work is dependent upon favorable weather.

Weather permitting, the right (outside) lane of I-75 North from milepost 22 to 23 will close from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the right (outside) lane of I-75 South from milepost 24 to 25 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Weigh in Motion project involves installing weigh scales in outside interstate lanes approximately 3,000 feet upstream of each of the existing 19 weigh stations to prescreen commercial vehicles.

The scales are designed to capture and record axle weights and gross vehicle weights as vehicles drive over a measurement site. Unlike static scales, WIM systems are capable of measuring vehicles traveling at reduced or normal speeds and do not require the vehicle to come to a stop. This makes the weighing process more efficient, and, in the case of commercial vehicles, allows for trucks below the weight limit to bypass static scales or inspection sites.
