VALDOSTA – A milestone weekend for Caitlyn Calhoun led to yet another Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week award this week, as announced on Tuesday by the league office.

Calhoun led the Blazers to both of their wins on the road against Mississippi College and racked up 21 strikeouts in the process. With 11 in game one of the series and ten more in the weekend finale, Calhoun improved her career total to 511, which made her just the second player in Blazer softball history to record 500-plus strikeouts in a career at Valdosta State. Karie Newton was the only other pitcher to reach the same mark with 580 punchouts from 1997-1999.

The honor for Calhoun, who improved her ERA to 1.45 on Sunday and lifted her season record to 19-4, marked her fifth of the season and the 13th of her career.

“Caitlyn had a great weekend,” said Head Coach Thomas Macera on Tuesday. “She pitched really well on Saturday, and although Sunday wasn’t her best game, she stayed in there and battled and put us in position to win the game. Our defense played great as well and only had one miscue on the entire weekend, which is really good for us.”

Valdosta State continues their push for a favorable seeding in the 2016 Gulf South Conference Tournament, beginning on Thursday against Abany State with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader before an important weekend series against the Rival Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday and Sunday.
