Blazer Tennis Defeats Top-Seeded UWF to Claim GSC Title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Valdosta State Blazer tennis team captured their 11th all-time Gulf South Conference Championship with a thrilling 5-4 win over the top-seeded West Florida Argonauts on Saturday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.

The Blazers fell behind 2-1 at the break after Leo Blay and Xavier Pineda teamed up to give VSU their only doubles victory, an 8-1 win over Juan Pablo-Boada and Pedro Rouse at No. 2.

Valdosta State fought back, however, starting with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win for Blay over the nation’s No. 7 singles player, Alex Peyrot.Gereon Heitmann held momentum at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pablo-Boada, and Pineda delivered a critical victory at No. 6 when he defeated Douglas Boe 6-0, 6-4.

The deciding point came at No. 3 with the two teams tied at 4-4. Fernando Rivas battled with Kenny Brasil in an emotional finale, where Rivas defeated Brasil 7-6 (8-6) in the first set, before falling 0-6 in set number two. With the GSC Championship hanging in the balance, Rivas regained composure and sealed the deal with a 6-4 win in the final set.

With the victory, Valdota State improved to 15-6 on the year, while the Argonauts fell to 18-6 overall.

Valdosta State’s win secured the team an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Tournament, and the Blazers will learn their seeding upon the announcement of the tournament field on Tuesday, May 3rd.
