Poling speaks as part of VSU Contemporary Writers Series

VALDOSTA — Valdosta author Dean Poling will discuss his books as part of the Valdosta State University Department of English Contemporary Writer Series.

He will speak and read from his books, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, VSU Student Union Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.

Poling is the managing editor of The Valdosta Daily Times. He has written three books. The books “Cowboy Boots and Pony Tales” and “Redneck Night at the Chinese Restaurant” are collections of columns from The Valdosta Daily Times. “Waiting for Willie” is a novel set in South Georgia.

Poling is a multiple winner of the Georgia Press Association’s first-place award for his serious and humorous newspaper columns.

During his years in newspapers, he has won more than 50 individual writing and journalism awards.

He has been with The Valdosta Daily TImes since 1989, working as the police and court reporter, becoming features editor, assistant managing editor, managing editor. He is a member of the newpaper’s editorial board and an associate editor with Valdosta Scene magazine.

He is a West Virginia native. He and wife Jetty have three sons.

The 2015-16 Contemporary Writer Series has hosted several writers including Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jane Smiley.
