Nakia Jones of Dawson has been sentenced to serve 20 years in prison for the 2013 Halloween night shooting of Dawson Mayor Christopher Wright. According to the plea bargain agreement Jones plead guilty to burglary and aggravated assault charges against Wright and his mother who was bound and and her life threatened. Jones co-defendant Corderio Laney is believed to be on the verge of accepting a similar plea deal.

A vehicular accident at North Valdosta Road and Val Del shut down traffic in all directions for a while as troopers with the GSP worked to clear up the wreckage. According to Trooper Chris Kelch an SUV driven by John Whiddon left the roadway and struck a guardrail then a utility pole. Whiddon was taken to SGMC but would not permit treatment and left against medical advice.

Law enforcement officials in Moultrie report that the February shooting death of Darian Williams occurred as a retaliation for the shooting death of Ryshaun Bigelow. Williams remains hospitalized. Darryl Thomas Jr. was arrested and charged in connection with the Williams shooting and Donterious Williams-Darian Williams brother is charged in connection with the murder of Ryahaun Bigelow and remains jailed.

 There is no shortage of qualifying candidates for elective offices in Valdosta and Lowndes County. Qualifying will continues through Friday. Monday marked the first day for individuals to qualify for the general primary, general non-partisan and special elections.
