Moody airman faces court-martial on child porn, molestation charges

VALDOSTA – The discovery of a child porn video led to the arrest of a Moody Air Force Base staff sergeant last year, and while investigators continue to compile evidence, the airman will face court-martial proceedings next month.

SSgt Troy D. Ecklund, 29, was arrested August 1 after the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained a child pornography video. The video contained identifying information which prompted investigators to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, said LCSO Capt. Stryde Jones.

“We were contacted about this video and, through an investigation, determined the victim in the video may have a connection to Moody Air Force base,” Jones said. “There were specific things in the video that we were able to use to identify Ecklund, and we made an arrest. We also determined the victim was known to the family.”

LCSO detectives charged Ecklund with child molestation, Jones said.

Ecklund also faces charges for allegedly violating the Uniformed Code of Military Justice.

Ecklund has been formally charged with two counts of violating Article 120b, sexual assault of a child, and three counts of violating Article 134, knowingly and wrongfully producing, possessing and distributing child pornography, said Kaitlyn Toner, 2nd Lt. USAF, Moody Public Affairs.

“Because of the nature of this case, we are doing a cooperative investigation with our partners with the FBI and the OSI (Office of Special Investigations) office at Moody,” Jones said. “The case is being prosecuted by the JAG (Judge Advocate General’s Corps) office at Moody.”

LCSO detectives seized several computers and cellphones during Ecklund’s arrest and have been processing evidence for several months.

“We are still doing computer forensics. There were several electronic items, computers, tablets, cellphones, that contained a large volume of data,” Jones said. “That’s one of the reasons why it is taking so long. We want to make sure we don’t overlook something.”

Although processing the evidence has taken months, Jones said it would have taken longer if it were not for LCSO’s in-house computer forensics detective Jack Priddy.

“This is the type of case where it really pays off to have a computer forensics person in house,” Jones said. ” We’ve put many hours into this investigation. If we had to send this outside to somebody, it would have been taxing on that agency. To do this in-house is a tremendous asset.”

Ecklund is currently being held in pre-trial confinement. He will appear for court-martial proceedings in April, Toner said.

“Our Airmen are held to the highest standards, and no form of misconduct is tolerated by the United States Air Force,” Toner said.

Troy looks kind of down in his picture. What seems to be the problem Troy? I guess the core values the Air Force has did not apply to you. Integrity, Service before self, and excellence in all we do missed you completely. I am glad they have stripped you of your stripes and that you will face a court martial in a uniform that will only hold the US insignia, name badge, and whatever ribbons you may hold. I feel that even these are too much for you to have. I hope that you will find some peace in what you have done.

You never know what goes on behind closed doors. If he is guilty, I’m glad he got caught. Pray for the victims.
