VALDOSTA – In 2011 Malcolm Mitchell left home in Valdosta to pursue his passion for football at the University of Georgia but home never left him. Malcolm said, “I always knew that it did not matter where I went, I always had the values of my hometown in me.”

In high school, under the leadership of Coach Rance Gillespie, Malcolm made a name for himself. He was an Under Armour All-American and one of the most talented athletes in his high school’s history.

While at the University of Georgia, he was considered one of the top wide receivers in Division I Football and was a top-ten all-time receivers in the university’s history. Malcolm graduated in December of 2015 with a Degree in Communications.

During his freshman year in college, Malcolm developed a love of reading. Initially, reading was a challenge, however, through perseverance, books became an avenue for expanding his curiosity, creativity and learning. Today, Malcolm is an avid reader, active member of a book club and reading mentor to elementary school students. “I enter classrooms an athlete, I leave a person who encouraged kids to read,” said Malcolm Mitchell. His inspirational story, which won the College Sports Media Awards Outstanding Special Feature, has been featured nationally on CBS Evening News, CBS Sports, ESPN, USA Today, and CNN and has been used by many schools as encouragement for students to embrace the importance of reading.

Most recently he was named National Captain of the Allstate Good Works Team (first student ever at UGA to win this honor), awarded the Haier Achievement Award and was the opening speaker for this year’s Georgia Striving Readers Leadership Conference. Malcolm received an invitation to the 2016 Savannah Book Festival, a rare achievement for a first time self-published author. In November, his book became the highest selling book in the history of the UGA Bookstore.

Malcolm feels it is now time to give back and to take a moment to thank those who believed in him and who helped him to accomplish his goals as an athlete and an author on March 26, Malcolm plans to do just that with a “Family Fun Day”.
“Valdosta has shown how much they love me, and this is my way of showing Valdosta how much I love and appreciate them,” said Mitchell.
