VSU’s Caitlyn Calhoun Named GSC Pitcher of the Week

VALDOSTA – The Blazers finished their first weekend series against a Gulf South Conference opponent on a high note with a Saturday win over North Alabama. With that win, senior Caitlyn Calhoun capped off an strong performance in the circle on the weekend and was named the GSC Pitcher of the Week by the league office on Tuesday.

Calhoun, who split a pair of complete games on the week after the Blazers fell short in a pitcher’s duel on Friday, helped VSU finish strong with a complete game victory on Saturday over the Lions. The win for Calhoun included just one run allowed on five hits and put the finishing touches on a weekend in which the Hamilton, Ohio native struck out six batters and posted a 1.38 ERA while holding opponents to a .208 batting average. In addition, Calhoun did not issue a walk over the course of 13.0 innings pitched.

The honor marks the first of the season for Calhoun and the eighth GSC Pitcher of the Week award of her career. Her statistics on the young 2016 season include a 1.88  ERA and a 5-1 record. She currently ranks second in the league with 44 strikeouts on the year.
