VSU Baseball Wins Second Straight; Defeats Albany State 4-2

| February 3, 2016

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Marcus Sigmon delivered his second homer in as many games to help spark a two-run sixth that lifted the Blazers to their second straight win, a 4-2 home opener triumph over the Golden Rams of Albany State at Billy Grant Field on Tuesday evening in Valdosta, Ga.

Clint Carr put Valdosta State on the board first in the bottom half of the fourth after a groundout fielder’s choice to second base scored Sigmon, who led off the frame with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved up to third on a single by Dalton Duty.

Two innings later, Quantico Dodson-Williams capitalized on an opportunity after Terrence Worthy and Kelvin Wimbish reached on an error and a walk issued by Jaykob Graham, respectively. The pair of runners came in to score and give ASU a 2-1 lead after Dodson-Williams split the right center field gap for a two-run double in the top of the sixth.

The Blazer offense picked Graham up in the bottom half of the same inning with the aforementioned homer by Sigmon. Carr followed up three batters later with his second RBI of the night, the result of a double to left center that brought in Chipper Andzel for the decisive run.

Duty provided his first home run of the season in the eighth. The solo shot put the Blazers in front 4-2 and helped VSU secure the win for Graham, who improved to 1-0 on the season. In addition, Hersey came on in the ninth and retired three of the four batters he faced to pick up the save.

Carr’s two RBI’s proved to be the difference in the contest, while Michael Gouge, Graham, and Duty all supplied pressure on the attack with two hits each.

Six different Blazer pitchers teamed up to claim the midweek victory, which helped lift the Blazers to 2-1 on the young season. Meanwhile, Albany State fell to 0-1.

The Blazers next matchup will take place at home on Saturday, February 6th against Wingate at noon. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Blazer Athletics are teaming up and using Saturday’s event to raise money to support Ami Guilliams, wife of Head Coach Greg Guilliams, who is currently fighting an intense battle against cancer. Tickets for the fundraiser can be purchased before Thursday at Citizens Community Bank on Baytree, Valdosta Pediatric, or Crossroads Baptist (contact Matt Gay). Each advanced ticket will include a BBQ dinner and admission to Saturday’s game, and all proceeds will go directly to the Guilliams family in an effort to help with medical expenses. For more information about the fundraiser event, call the Blazer Athletic office at 229-333-5890.
