PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Valdosta State softball team dropped the Gulf South Conference series finale against West Florida in a 4-3 loss on Sunday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.

The loss capped off a series sweep for the Argonauts and marked the first time Valdosta State has been swept by a GSC opponent on the road since the league’s establishment of the new three-game format in 2014. With the loss, VSU fell to 14-6-1 on the year and 4-5 in GSC play. Meanwhile, the Argonauts improved to 17-4 overall and bumped their conference record up to 7-2.

Valdosta State outhit the Argos with eight hits against UWF’s five, but West Florida outlasted the Blazers with some timely swings in the contest, which led to four runs on two extra base hits. Meghan Toney delivered a two-run double in the third and Kalyn Chapman struck for her fifth homer of the year to plate a pair in the fourth.

Danielle Patterson drove in two of VSU’s three runs in the game with a sacrifice fly in the second and a bases-loaded, RBI base on balls in the fifth. In addition, Brandy Morgan lifted a sacrifice fly to center in the fifth to score Taylor Hartenbach, who remained red hot with two hits and a run scored in the contest.

The loss dropped Caitlyn Calhoun to 9-3 on the season, while UWF’s Sarah Maloney came on in the third to deliver 2.1 innings of work and boost her record to 4-1. Chapman relieved Maloney late to record the save.

Valdosta State aims to bounce back next weekend in Livingston, Ala., with another three game GSC set against the West Alabama Tigers. The first game of the weekend series is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
