VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State softball team is off to a red hot start in 2016, and Huntyre Elling’s role in the Blazers’ perfect 4-0 weekend at the Peach Belt / Gulf South Conference Crossover Tournament in Columbus, Ga. earned the senior her first career GSC Pitcher of the Week honor, as announced by the GSC office on Tuesday.

“The pitching staff has worked extra hard in the fall to prepare for the season, and it’s nice to see all of the hard work starting to pay off,” said Elling on Tuesday. I’m sure this isn’t the last time on of our pitchers will get recognition this season. For the first weekend, I was glad to see how well we all played together and how much talent we truly have.”

Elling went 2-0 in the circle and did not allow a run in 14 innings of work. Her most impressive performance came on Sunday afternoon against the No. 1 ranked North Georgia Nighthawks, when she came on in relief with two aboard and nobody out in the top half of the first inning and proceeded to retire 21 of the next 22 batters. On the weekend, she allowed just four hits and held opponents to a .087 batting average. In addition, the struck out nine and walked just one in the tournament.

“Coach [Thomas Macera]’s big thing this year is to compete and have fun, and I think we did a really good job of showing that this past weekend,” added Elling. “I just can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us, because I know we’re ready for anything.”
