VALDOSTA, Ga. – When the Valdosta State softball team takes the field for the first time this weekend, they will do so as the No. 6 team in the nation, according to the preseason national rankings posted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday.

“Our goal is always to be nationally ranked among the top ten, to compete with the best in the nation, and to win games in order to maintain that ranking,” said Head Coach Thomas Macera, who is rapidly approaching his 700th collegiate coaching victory and is also closing in on his 500th win at Valdosta State. “I don’t think [the NFCA ranking] puts any more added pressure on us beyond the pressure we put on ourselves as far as what our expectations are this season.”

With an opening weekend slate that includes match-ups against Armstrong Atlantic, who is receiving votes in the national poll, and a Sunday showdown against the defending National Champion North Georgia Nighthawks, who were unanimously named the No. 1 team in the nation, there will be no time to ease in to things.

“We’re playing some really good teams this weekend, and you don’t really have a lot of time to get stuff together,” said Macera. “You’ve got to play hard coming out of the gate, so we’re going to have to go out there and play top ball immediately. For us, the mental side of the game will be important this weekend, and the challenge for us will be to stay in four very tough games mentally. There’s no warm up. When we hit that field, it’s on.”

The Gulf South Conference was well represented in the national poll, with the defending GSC Champion Shorter team coming in at No. 3, Alabama-Huntsville trailing VSU at No. 18, and North Alabama receiving votes.

Valdosta State, who was selected by GSC coaches last week as the predicted top finisher in the conference upon conclusion of the upcoming season, will open up on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Columbus, Ga. against Augusta State at the Peach Belt/Gulf South Conference crossover tournament in Columbus, Ga.
