Proposed bill could allow tasers on GA campuses

| January 20, 2016

ATLANTA – In what is being described as a compromise, a Georgia lawmaker is proposing a new bill that would allow stun-guns on college campuses.

State law currently bans students from carrying handguns on campus. Legislation that would allow students to carry firearms has gained some traction among some Georgia lawmakers, but Rep. Buzz Brockway (R-Lawrenceville) hopes his bill will be a welcome compromise.

In an interview with WXIA, Brockway said allowing tasers on campus “could be a compromise way to give some students an additional choice in personal protection without going so far as allowing firearms on campus,” adding that the devices are “defensive weapons. They’re not lethal weapons.”

In the meantime, lawmakers are waiting for an opportunity this session to revive a bill that would allow handguns on campus.
