Dr. Diane K. Roberts to discuss her latest book: “Tribal: College Football and the Secret Heart of America”

THOMASVILLE – The Thomas University Book Club will present author, journalist and FSU professor Diane K. Roberts to discuss her latest work “Tribal: College Football and the Secret Heart of America.” Roberts’ discussion will take place as part of TU Book Club’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, in Room A-1 of Smith-Bonvillian Hall on the TU Main Campus.

Roberts is professor of literature and writing at Florida State University and a visiting fellow in creative writing at the University of Northumbria in England. She has also been a long-time commentator for NPR; a political columnist for the St. Petersburg Times; as well as a journalist for the New York Times, the Guardian, the Washington Post, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Orlando Sentinel.

In “Tribal,” Roberts explores college football’s grip on the country. For die-hard fans, the sport is a comfortable retreat into tradition, proof of our national virility, and a reflection of an America without troubling ambiguities. Roberts argues that it is also a representation of the buried heart of this country: a game and a culture built upon the dark past of the South, secrets so obvious they hide in plain sight. With her droll Southern voice and a phrase-turning style reminiscent of Roy Blount Jr. and Sarah Vowell, Roberts offers a sociological unpacking of the sport’s dubious history that is at once affectionate and cautionary.

The TU Book Club is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be provided. For additional information, e-mail Dr. Bonnie Woodbery atbwoodbery@thomasu.edu or call 229-227-6964.
