Fisher Comments on LSU Job Prospects

| November 25, 2015

TALLAHASSEE — LSU still has a football coach with Les Miles under contract, but reports continue to suggest that may not be the case for too much longer. With multiple reports suggesting LSU boosters are ready and willing to pay the buyout price for the contract of Miles, totaling $15 million, one coach appears to be the primary target if and when LSU cuts the cord with Miles. Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher appears to be that coach.

With the rumor mill spinning wildly, Fisher was forced to confront the headlines during his weekly press conference in Tallahassee Monday. Fisher took the high road in avoiding entering the discussion out of respect for Miles currently holding the job.

“I have no comment on that,” Fisher said, according to The Orlando Sentinel. “I have a policy: I don’t speak about jobs, that’s unfair to the players that are there, the players that are here and the coaches here and there. There’s no job opening. That’s a policy that I have. I’m not going to comment on any job in any way, shape or form.”

Except, of course, to say no comment. Offering any fodder for the media does nobody any favors at LSU or FSU, and Fisher knows this. even if Fisher is interested in the possibility of becoming the next coach at LSU, serving up a hint of interest publicly is a terrible move for Fisher, his staff at Florida State, Seminoles players, Miles, LSU’s coaching staff and LSU’s players. If LSU does enter the reality of pursuing a new coach, then Fisher does make some sense for the program if they can lure him away from Florida State.

Fisher has been the head coach at Florida State since 2010, succeeding the legendary Bobby Bowden after previously serving as Bowden’s offensive coordinator and being tabbed as the coach-in-waiting. Before arriving in Tallahassee to be a part of Bowden’s staff in 2007, Fisher served the same role from 20900 through 2006 at LSU as a member of Nick Saban‘s coaching staff in Baton Rouge. Fisher remained a part of the LSU staff after Saban left for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and Miles was hired as the head coach.

Hiring Fisher to be the next LSU head coach would be quite the circle of life move for the Tigers.
