WAYCROSS — A elderly woman has been killed after she was struck by a truck while crossing a highway near Waycross.

The Georgia State Patrol has reported Mattie Lee Devers, 87 of Elane Avenue in Waycross, was struck by a pickup truck, driven by James Brown, 38 of Waycross.  The incident occurred Friday evening on US Highway 1 North.

According to reports, Brown’s 1997 Ford Ranger was traveling north near the intersection of Wacona Drive in Waycross, when he saw Devers crossing the highway.  Brown hit the brakes, attempting to stop, but he could not avoid hitting the elderly woman, according the the GSP report.

The victim landed on the hood of Brown’s truck and remained there as the truck came to a rest some 85 feet after the initial impact.  Then Devers’ body struck the pavement, traveling a further 10 feet, according to reports.

It seems Dever had avoided making impact with another vehicle, which narrowly missed her before she was struck by Brown’s truck.

In the GSP report, Brown stated he saw the other vehicle swerve into the turning lane, and after that, he then saw Devers in his lane.  Brown was not injured.

Devers was transported to the hospital in Waycross, where she was later pronounced dead.
