Tift County considers Voting Precinct Consolidation

| September 19, 2015

TIFTON — Voters in Tift County are asked to learn more about plans to consolidate voting precincts within the county.

A meeting will be held on Monday at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center, beginning at 6 pm.

The proposal calls for the entire county to vote at one location, the UGA Conference Center.  Officials state this would save the county $2000 per election.  Opponents say the move would hinder voting for elderly, handicapped, and lower income voters in rural areas of the county.

The Tift Democrat Party has already publicly stated their opposition to the plan, stating that the only benefit for this plan would be to those employed by the Board of Elections and poll workers.

Proponents of the plan state that other counties, such as Lowndes, have consolidated precincts.  Whereas the county had 37, Lowndes reduced that to only 9 with one precinct holding almost 20,000 voters, making it alone as large as Tift County.
