TYBEE ISLAND — Five people were involved in current-related drownings off the coast of Tybee Island, near Savannah.

Reports from WSAV state two people have died, two others are recovering at Memorial Health University Hospital, and one remains missing as a result of the Sunday incident.

Crews have been searching for the missing man since Sunday.

The incident was related to a Hindu religious celebration.  Participants gathered from Georgia and South Carolina for the Ganesh Visarjan festival on Sunday evening.

Part of the ceremony included going out onto the Back River in boats.  According to WSAV meterologists in a report, high tide and strong rip currents may have played a part in the incident.

The two dead victims’ bodies were found on a sandbar.
