Disney plans Star Wars Themed “Lands”

| August 16, 2015

ORLANDO — A galaxy far, far away will soon be a lot closer, particularly for people living in or near Southern California and Central Florida.

Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger on Saturday announced at the D23 Expo that “Star Wars”–themed ”lands” are coming to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.

‘Star Wars Land’ concept.

Each of the Star Wars “lands” will comprise 14 acres and feature two attractions, according to the Disney Parks blog.

“We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever,” Iger said. “These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”

The Star Wars franchise already has a presence at the Disney theme parks, including a 3D, motion-simulated space-flight attraction and show called “Jedi Training Academy” at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Disney World also hosts Star Wars Weekends, multiweek festivals including parades, shows and Star Wars characters.

Opening dates for the new lands have not been announced.
