VALDOSTA —  Lowndes County officials have reopened the closed portion of Shiloh Road in north Lowndes County after it was closed due to a new sinkhole.

The 150-foot sinkhole opened up last Tuesday afternoon under a cypress pond.  Due to the unstable nature of the sinkhole, officials thought it best to restrict travel on Shiloh Road near the sinkhole.

However, after monitoring of the site by geologists, engineers and soil scientists, the area was considered stable enough to resume normal traffic.  Officials will continue to monitor the site as well as a similar sinkhole on nearby Snake Nation Road that may be part of a common fault line.
