Young Girl Drowns in River

LAKELAND — A young, 2-year old girl drowned Thursday in the Alapaha River in Lanier County.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon as severe weather moved through the area.

Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton told WALB that the accident happened around 5 p.m. in the Alapaha River by Highway 37 near Lakeland.

According to the report, a family was spending time by the river near when storms rolled through the area.  They took shelter under a bridge nearby, and lost track of their 2-year-old daughter.  When they couldn’t find her, they called the sheriff’s office for help.

Deputies eventually found the young girl dead in the river downstream.  Sheriff Norton called the death a tragic incident.

The name of the girl or her family was not immediately released.
