71-Year Old Arrested in Stewart County Murder

LUMPKIN — An arrest has been made related to the murder of Richard Byrd of Stewart County.

James Eggleston, 71 of Lumpkin, was found in a hotel room in Wentzville, Missouri by authorities. The Wentzville Police Department’s SWAT team took Eggleston into custody Thursday night.

The suspect lives on Hall Road in Lumpkin.

Byrd was found murdered on Tuesday.  Reports state that he had been assaulted with a sharp edged weapon.  GBI agents developed Eggleston as a suspect and tracked him across the country.

Eggleston was arrested without incident, and taken to the St. Charles County Jail where he is awaiting extradition to Stewart County to face murder charges.
