One Dead, One Injured in Vehicle-Train Accident

JACKSONVILLE — One person died and a second was taken to a hospital in serious condition after a train hit a vehicle on Jacksonville’s Westside Saturday evening.

Authorities responded to the 9700 block of West Beaver Street after the accident was reported about 7:05 p.m. And found wreckage so bad that it was impossible to tell what type of vehicle was hit, said Christian Hancock, spokesman for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

“It’s a horrific incident,” Hancock said.

The vehicle was leaving the Publix warehouse facility and was hit by a westbound CSX train, Hancock said. It is unclear if the victims worked for Publix.

He said authorities believe the two victims were the only ones in the vehicle but in the early stages of the investigation it’s impossible to be sure there weren’t more people inside.

Witnesses told investigators the arms were down in the intersection at the time of the crash.

An eastbound train was stopped west of the intersection at the time of the crash and was not involved in the collision, Hancock said.
