Gainesville GA

GAINESVILLE — A man who appeared intoxicated opened fire Monday at police officers outside a Georgia State Patrol post before one of the officers shot back and wounded him, authorities said.

Leighton Beaux Marchetta, 21, drove a Ford pickup to a state patrol office on Cleveland Highway in Gainesville, then got out armed with a rifle, said Sherry Lang, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He challenged two state troopers standing outside.

“He was yelling something to the effect of, ‘You guys are going to have to kill me,'” Lang told reporters.

Marchetta fired a shot, moved toward the troopers who warned him to stop, then fired again, Lang said. One of the troopers shot back, wounding Marchetta in his right shoulder. Lang said Marchetta dropped the rifle, and police handcuffed him. The suspect was being treated at Northwest Georgia Medical Center for a non-life threatening injury.

None of the state troopers were injured.

Lang said investigators were not immediately aware of any connections between Marchetta and the troopers he targeted. Their investigation was continuing Monday.

It was not immediately clear whether Marchetta had a defense attorney.
