Lakeland > Jay Shaw Passes Away at the Age of 67

LAKELAND — Lakeland Mayor, Jay Slaton Shaw passed away at the age of 67-years-old, Monday morning.

Shaw was a husband, father of two and a grandfather of four. Jay was married to Libby Shaw and had two sons, Jason and Sam.

Shaw served as Lakeland’s mayor for 10 years, and as a Georgia State Representative for District 176 for 16 years. He held the position as Mayor of Lakeland from 1981 to 1990.

Shaw served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1994 to 2010, where he became heavily involved in Georgia’s health-care system. He was elected as a Democrat, and remained a Democrat, even after the Republican party offered him a position.

His son, Jason Shaw filled his position as a Republican, Georgia State Representative for District 176 in the House of Representatives. Shaw’s mother, Doris Pafford Shaw and his uncle, Bobby Pafford were state representatives for 12 years.

Shaw’s first and last term as a member of the Department of Transportation board began in 2010 and ended April 15, 2015.  During his time in Lakeland, Shaw owned an insurance business, Shaw Insurance Services.

Shaw passed away while awaiting a heart transplant at Emory University Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are not available at this time.
