JEKYLL ISLAND — There is a new destination hotel on the Golden Isles as a new Westin Hotel opens its doors.

The new $41 million hotel boasts 187 guest rooms and 13 suites for guests, part of an effort to once again revitalize Jekyll Island.  There is also a retail center to complement the convention center on the island.  The Atlantic Ocean and beach are just steps away, too.

The hotel will welcome its first convention group on Thursday when the members of the Georgia Rotary International arrive.

The hotel has a definite local flavor, offering meeting and ballrooms named Sapelo, Cumberland and Satilla.

The island has been working to increase the availability of hotel rooms to support convention business.  Currently, before the Westin’s opening, there were only 750 room to be had on the island.  The Holiday Inn Resort opened in March, offering 95 of its planned 157 rooms.
