GAINESVILLE — A Hall County toddler was hit and killed Sunday by his uncle, who police say left the scene after the incident.

WSB is reporting that the incident happened just after noon at a home in the 2400 block of Miller Drive.   The report stated authorities noted that Joshua Sanders, 19, was attempting to back up his Chevrolet pickup truck when his nephew Landon Martin ran behind the vehicle.

Georgia State Patrol says the teen got out and saw what happened, but then left the scene. A deputy spotted him about a half-mile away and escorted him back to the scene.  Reports from WSB also stated Sanders has been charged with DUI.

WSB spoke with the victim’s grandmother, who said her son (Sanders) loved his nephew and would never intentionally hurt him.

“He was standing right there playing and Josh went to back up and Josh jumped out of the truck and started screaming, ‘Landon! Landon!’ And then he ran up the driveway and started calling 911. He didn’t mean to hit that baby. He didn’t. He loved him,” said grandmother Martha Saunders in the report.

Investigators say Saunders was cooperative, and extremely upset and remorseful.

Sanders was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
