Night Hawks > Swimmers Soar on Day 1 of NAIA Nationals

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Thomas University men’s and women’s swim teams have had a great start to the 2015 NAIA Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championshipsat the Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) Natatorium in Oklahoma City, Okla.

A total of 11 national champions were awarded on Thursday and three new NAIA National Championship records were set.

On the women’s side of the competition, two individuals were in action for Lady Night Hawks while the team as a whole participated in two relays. Junior Madison Osterlund placed 19th in the 200 yard IM (2:13.38) while sophomore Zephinah Barney finished 40th in the 50 yard free (25.57). Thomas’ 200 medley relay team finished 16th (1:56.37) while the 800 freestyle relay team placed 15th (8:21.6).

For the men, Victor Vassallo and Christian Marchione competed on day one of the National Championships. Vassallo placed 16th in the 200 yard IM (1:55.52) while Marchione had the best individual finish of the day for all Night Hawks placing 11th in the 50 yard free (20.7). The Night Hawk 200 medley relay team turned in the best finish for all of Thomas’ relay teams placing 8th overall with a time of 1:34.11. The 800 freestyle relay team was also in action finishing in 17th (7:25.63).

At the conclusion of the first day of events, Oklahoma Baptist leads in both the men’s and women’s team rankings. Bison men have 262.5 points followed by Olivet Nazarene at 191.5 and Concordia (Calif.) with 118. The Lady Bison lead the women’s competition with 195 points while Sun Conference foe SCAD-Savannah are in second with 137 and Brenau (Ga.) in third with 124.

Through the first 14 events, Thomas’ sits 15th overall in the combined standings with 35 points.
