Georgia > Technical College System to be Renamed

| March 4, 2015

ATLANTA — State legislators have decided to rename the Technical College System, which includes colleges such as Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.

With a vote of 122-40, the state House passed a bill that would rename the system the Georgia Career College System.

The desired outcome is an effort to see Georgia’s technical colleges better reflect the state’s initiative toward workforce development needs.

“The intent is to better market our state for economic development and growth,” Rep. Chad Nimmer, R-Blackshear, one of Deal’s floor leaders in the House and the bill’s chief sponsor, told lawmakers Tuesday.

There are cost concerns as well.  However, the Georgia Department of Corrections has offered to step in and build new signs on the various campuses.  Other costs will include everything from stationery to website updates, all of which will be phased in over time.

The Senate will now consider the bill.
