Valdosta > VSU Lady Blazers Hosts Annual Shoot For A Cure

| February 16, 2015

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University women’s basketball team is hosting their 8th annual funding event, Shoot For A Cure. Shoot For A Cure was created as a cumulative funding event for cancer awareness.

The event asks that attendees donate 5 cents to a $1.00 for every 3-point shot made during the game. The event has added a silent and live auction as well. This year’s item to be auctioned off is a handcrafted basketball created by, cancer survivor Mr. Billy Dykes. Dykes is an active member of the Partnership Cancer Fund of Lowndes County and all proceeds raised at the event will go to the fund.

VSU Women’s Basketball coach, Kiley Hill said, “When we got the Shoot For a Cure off the ground, I wanted the monies to stay locally and see a direct benefit our neighbors.”

Hill was asked to help with the PCF program and to embrace their philosophy of ‘neighbors helping neighbors.’

“With the help of the VSU community, Lady Blazer Basketball Fans, Boosters, former players, and the Valdosta Community as a whole we have raised over $25,000 over the last 7 years through the Shoot For a Cure and Pink Zone game,” Hill said.

This year’s Shoot For A Cure event also known as The Pink Zone Game is sponsored by Southern OBGYN. The Pink Zone Game will be held at 6:00 p.m. against the University of West Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at the PE Complex.

“We will be providing an information booth on the PCF, Southern OGYN, along with giveaways. The night will also include raffle, silent auction, and possible live auction on multiple items such as:

· Billy’s Handcrafted Wilson Basketball

· 32 in Flat Screen TV

· Tailgate Grill

· V-State apparel

· And much much more….
Our team will be in our pink uniform we breakout each year. It is a fun night of fundraising and education. We will make a few check presentations to the PCF too. One of these by Southern OBGYN,” Hill said.
