crime scene police search investigate

BEN HILL COUNTY — Authorities have confirmed they are searching a pond believed to hold the remains of a beauty pageant contestant who vanished in 2005.

Tara Grinstead, then 31, disappeared after attending the Georgia Sweet Potato Pageant in October of 2005.  The teacher’s remains are believed to be in a pond on Satilla Drive near Fitzgerald.  No reasons for the discovery have been provided at this time.

Authorities have been draining the pond since Monday with hopes of finding evidence of Grinstead, whose disappearance has never been solved.

Grinstead was officially declared dead by a probate judge in December of 2010.  That declaration was at the request of her father, Billy Grinstead, who petitioned for the declaration in September of 2010.
