VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Fire Department is proud to announce the appointment of Captain James Clinkscales to the position of Fire Marshal, effective Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.

Capt. Clinkscales recently served in the Fire Prevention Division of the Griffin, Ga. Fire and Rescue Department.  He comes to the city with 25 years of experience in the field of fire service, which includes many different aspects of fire prevention and emergency services.

Hard work and determination set the pace for Capt. Clinkscales’ career.  He began his career as a Firefighter and quickly advanced to the position of Fire Engineer. When he realized early in his career that he wanted to work in the Fire Prevention Division, he voluntarily worked in that division until he was eventually promoted to Fire Lieutenant of the division. In 2008, he was promoted to Fire Captain.

Capt. Clinkscales holds a State Deputy Fire Marshal certification from the State of Georgia, which includes the qualifications for a Certified Inspector, Certified Plans Reviewer, and State Certified Arson Investigator. He is also certified as a Firefighter II, Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector I, Post Arson Investigator II, Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Specialist II, Public Fire and Life Safety Instructor, and Fire Instructor II.

Capt. Clinkscales is a Certified Peace Officer through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council and holds a certificate from the Columbus State University Professional Management Program.  He also has experience working with the Insurance Service Office (ISO), which provides ratings for local fire departments that directly impact the insurance premiums citizens pay for their homes and businesses.

In addition to his role as Fire Marshal, Capt. Clinkscales will serve as the VFD Public Information Officer, working with local media to inform citizens about fire safety and prevention and other VFD matters.
